We believe that new technologies for learning should not just replace the textbook, but transform the way students are "taught". The predominant approach to learning in the classroom has always been teacher-centered. Students are, for the most part, passive participants in the process. Teachers lecture, students listen and take notes. The migration of the teacher from "Sage on the Stage" to "Guide on the Side" has been talked about for years, but mostly only talked about. Now, through the advent of web-based learning support technologies and communication capabilities, this transformation to a truly "student-centered" learning process is rapidly taking place.
EnableMath is built on the theory that "productive practice" is the key ingredient to successful mastery of mathematics. The program provides extensive support to the student in this process, but not in the form of one-way software presentations that mirror the lecture. Students are actively engaged in the learning process through the application of step-by-step examples and conceptual visualizations backed up by visual and audio guides. The primary responsibility of the EnableMath Personal Learning Manager is to ensure that the student is indeed practicing productively and mastering each and every assignment. We are confident and our data has convincingly shown that students who practice productively and master the assignments master the math.
