Why is Math so Hard for so many to Learn?

The Old Technology of Education
Math is the point of failure for education. Today more than a third of all entering college students and three-quarters of all entering community college students do not have the competency in math to even take the most basic college courses in this subject. Six of the eight top courses that students list as “killer courses” are in math. Despite nearly 50 years searching for solutions no one has been able to stem this tide of failure. Why?

Math is a language made up of two kinds of things, processes like multiplication and concepts like slope. Processes in math like any other processes from riding a bike to hitting a golf ball can only be learned through practice. Concepts require understanding. And since the concepts of math are for the most part visual, that understanding requires visualization. Learning math thus requires effective practice and interactive visualization. Unfortunately the existing technology of education, paper and ink for the student and chalk and slate for the teacher to not promote effective practice or visualization. So if you are not already a good visualizer and don’t like to practice math processes, then math will be hard for you to learn.

What if we had a new technology for education?
What if we introduce a new technology to make the concepts in math interactive visualizations and the practice in math more efficient and effective? What if a student can play with a powerful visualization of a concept so the he or she can understand it and see how it works? What if we could make homework, practice, effective and efficient by giving students immediate feedback, by adapting each and every problem to their learning level? What if we based completion of assignments on mastery and not an arbitrary number? What if we linked every homework problem to a one-step-at-a-time example?

When we developed EnableMath we asked these questions. The program has been used now for three years and we are convinced by the number of successes we have had that we were on the right track. We believe that math can be much easier to learn with this new technology. We believe that even students who have had severe problems learning math can doing well with it.

If you or your child finds math difficult to learn, we say this: you are not stupid. You can learn math. You just need support from the right technology. We built EnableMath for you and we have proven that it works.
