Dramatic Improvements in Retention and Success at De Anza College |
In just its second year of participation in the EnableMath Retention Grant Program De Anza College is seeing significant improvements in both retention and success for those developmental math students enrolled in the program.
The College, located in Cupertino, California, became the first institution to implement the comprehensive initiative, beginning in September 2005. During the first year of the program approximately 800 students participated which constitutes about 20% of the total developmental mathematics enrollment. The students in the program achieved a pass rate of 68% with an attrition rate of 12% as compared to 57% success and 23% attrition for students in the non-EnableMath sections.
Building on the lessons learned in the first year, the College enrolled approximately 500 students this past fall in the EnableMath Program. While the rates of success and attrition remained approximately the same for non-participating students, the rate of success for participating students rose to 76% with only an 8% attrition rate.
De Anza College is serving as the prototype for the EnableMath Retention Grant Initiative. Pima Community College in Tucson, Arizona and Saint Paul College in Saint Paul, Minnesota were selected to join De Anza in the fall of 2006.

The De Anza College Initiative |
| De Anza College, in Cupertino, California, became the first institution to implement a comprehensive Noel-Levitz EnableMath Retention Program in September of 2005. We are working with the faculty and staff at De Anza to craft a model program aimed at achieving significant and sustained improvements in the academic success and retention of developmental math students. Results from the first year are very encouraging. Approximately 20% of the students in developmental course sections participated in the EnableMath Program. Students in the EnableMath program sections achieved a pass rate of 69% and a drop out rate of 12% as compared to a 57% pass rate and 23% drop out rate for those students not in the EnableMath program... read more |

Alternative Approaches |
| Every institution that we work with suffers from similarly low pass rates in developmental math. And, while most institutions embed the use of EnableMath in their regular developmental math courses and have the students do all of their homework using EnableMath, this is not the only model we have seen employed. Some use the EnableMath program as part of an intensive refresher program or short course. Still others make EnableMath available to students as a supplemental instructional resource. The University of Arizona and Florida Community College at Jacksonville provide interesting and promising examples of these alternative approaches... read more |
